Top tips before you buy

Before you rush to hit the switch button, take a few minutes to read through our essential pre-purchase checklist to make sure you protect your wallet and get the exact service you need.

• Check your postcode first: Broadband speeds in the UK are still quite localized. One street can get gigabit speeds and cable TV, and the next road might be stuck with basic fibre. Always enter your address into our checker to see exactly which packages and speeds you can get where you live.
• Be honest about your viewing habits: It's so easy to get seduced, but you need to consider what you'll actually watch. If your household generally sticks to viewing via apps and Netflix then don't pay a premium for hundreds of niche channels you'll never watch.
• Read the fine print: The majority of TV and broadband bundles lock you into an 18 or 24 month commitment. So it's vital to note the annual price hikes. Since recent rule changes, most providers now specify an annual price rise, so be sure to budget for those.
• Haggle! If you're nearing the end of an existing contract then we'd always recommend you consider switching. But whatever you do, letting it just roll over is always a mistake, as your bill will skyrocket. Call your provider's cancellations department, and tell them you're considering switching. They'll likely offer you a big discount just to keep you on board.
